It was previously reported that Liam Payne was quietly dropped by his music label Universal just a day before his tragic death. Sources claimed that the label dropped him because they feared that the kind of music he wanted to make would not appeal to their One-Direction fan base. Payne died at the age of 31 after falling from the third-floor balcony of his hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Wednesday, October 16.

Universal backtracks due to music choices and online memes
A source exclusively told Mail Online: ‘Liam wanted to make the kind of music he liked, but his label believed it wouldn’t win over 1D fans, so there was a disagreement over what to do. How their brand should have been marketed. Sources also claimed that the label was under a limited budget, which is one reason why Universal ended its relationship with Payne so that it could invest money on other promising artists.
He alleged that Payne’s bad press, including “all the memes and jokes people made about him online”, was partly a result of the label’s decision. The source told the media outlet, “The entire music industry is downsizing and restructuring to cut costs so Universal decided to quietly drop Liam and invest in other artists. He didn’t need the money because he was rich, but yes it hurt him because he was under constant pressure to compete with the other guys in the band.’
The source added, “Unfortunately, part of the decision was inspired by all the memes and jokes people made about him online. His team saw this as a signal to jump ship. She faced criticism on social media for a clip of Payne dancing to the Macarena during intermission while attending Niall Horan’s concert on 2 October. Many described his behavior at the concert as “disgraceful” and “embarrassing”.
Another source told the media outlet, “It was more to do with public perception than anything because it’s very hard to work with other musicians. But Liam was being publicly ridiculed, so it was very easy for his team to abandon him. He further stated that “Liam made millions for the industry, but when he wanted it to support him he was left out.”
