Gusadi dance master Kanak Raju dies at the age of 84, PM Modi pays tribute to the 'profound dancer and cultural icon'

Famous Gusadi folk dance guru and Padma Shri awardee Kanaka Raju has passed away. The 84-year-old dancer, also known as Gusadi Raju, died on Friday due to age-related complications. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief on Saturday.

Kanak Raju’s last rites will be performed on Saturday at his native village Marlavai in Jainur mandal of Kumaram Bheem Asifabad district. Kanaka Raju, who was honored with the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2021 for his notable contribution to the art, was a prominent figure in the Gusadi dance community, especially in Telangana.

PM Modi wrote in his X account, “Saddened by the demise of Shri Kanak Raju ji, a keen dancer and cultural icon. His rich contribution in preserving Gusadi dance will always inspire the coming generations.

The Prime Minister expressed his condolences to the family and fans of Kanaka Raju, emphasizing the lasting impact of the dancer’s work.

The Prime Minister concluded, “His dedication and passion ensured that important aspects of cultural heritage could develop in their authentic form. Condolences to his family and fans. Om Shanti.”

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy also expressed deep grief over the death of a prominent Gusadi dancer. The Chief Minister said that Kanaka Raju has been recognized as an extraordinary artist for introducing Gusadi to the world and preserving the art and cultural tradition of Telangana.

According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, the Telangana Chief Minister said that the death of the renowned dancer is an irreparable loss to the folk art. The CM expressed his deep condolences to the bereaved family members and has ordered officials to conduct the last rites of Kanak Raju with state honours, the statement said.

Known for its vibrant expressions and rhythmic movements, Gusadi dance holds deep cultural significance, often performed during festivals and community gatherings. The efforts of the late dancer in promoting and preserving this traditional art form were commendable.

Through several performances and workshops, Kanaka Raju showcased the rich heritage of the Gusadi community, inspiring the younger generation to connect with and celebrate their folk traditions. Their dedication ensured that the essential aspects of this cultural heritage could develop in their authentic form.
