Reminiscing about his past relationship with Carey, the America’s Got Talent host said during Thursday’s episode of the podcast, “I didn’t really care what the world thought because the perception, you know, is what it is. People will love you one day and hate you the next.”

Canon added, “I could care less about it. …but ‘Who am I?’ Explaining that he faced a major identity crisis as the husband of the Emotions singer, who has been referred to as the “Songbird Supreme” by Guinness World Records.

“I got married at 20, do you know what I mean? To the biggest star in the world,” the Wild ‘N Out host recalled, “my trajectory was here (pointing downwards) and then his — he’s already in a different stratosphere ”Cannon married Carey in 2008 after just a few months of dating.

Revealing that he became “really comfortable” with the lifestyle he got after his marriage, Cannon explained that he was hesitant about his personal goals and ambitions. “He got the islands and I was waking up in the afternoon and people were bringing me steaks on platters. But I’m like, ‘It’s not a bust,'” he said.

The Masked Singer host continued, “I’d go to sleep at night wondering, like, ‘Is this who I am?’ Am I Maria’s man? Is this what my life should be like?” before admitting, “There’s nothing wrong with that.”

Following the arrival of his twins, whom he welcomed in 2011, Cannon struggled with his masculinity and his family’s “hierarchy”. “And then when you have kids… your masculinity is like, wait, I’m carrying a purse, diaper bag, I’m standing on the corner. She is doing amazing to her full potential,” he said.

When the podcast host insisted that Carey “deserves it,” the She Ball actor agreed, adding, “I believe she needs someone like that. I’m not that guy.” While Canon tried his best to be a supportive husband to the fantasy singer, he felt like a “participant” in her world.

“I’m the main character,” Canon explained. “I was angry at myself. It was like muscle atrophy. I had courage. It was like, I’m not the man God sent me to this earth to be,” he added.

“Love kept me there. I was like, ‘You need a support system. You need someone who doesn’t just want you for your money, who is honest, someone who is willing to build a family and raise some wonderful children.’ This was my goal. But then there was always something inside me,” the comedian said.
