Papon’s Diwali is a festival of lamps, family gatherings and earthen fireworks.
For singer-composer Papon, Diwali has always been full of traditions. “Since childhood, I have celebrated with friends and family. Till today, I make sure to meet everyone to celebrate the festival. [We had] Lots of lamps to light the entire house and our entire campus in Guwahati (his hometown in Assam),” he recalls.
The singer, who is preparing to release new music soon, tells us about a special tradition he has with his father. “In Assam, you decorate every corner of the entire compound you live in,” he explains, adding that the process of lighting each individual diya was one of dedication.
The singer says fondly, “My father and I used to keep earthen lamps, which were placed on the leaves of banana trees. This is done very beautifully in Assam… I used to stay with him till very late night ” He also shares a unique aspect of the celebrations from home. He explains, “We use local fireworks, which are made at a place called Barpeta. They are very unique and are made of clay etc.”
Ask Papon what Diwali means to him and he replies, “I think spreading positivity and happiness, as much as possible, is the best message to take away from this festival.” My father and I used to place earthen lamps on the leaves of banana trees. I used to stay up late at night with her
