Armaan Malik, Maroon 5's shows at Coldplay are selling out: This is why Indian acts are getting bigger

Armaan Malik has received a nomination in the Best India Act category at the MTV Europe Music Awards for his song Always with British singer Calum Scott, his third nomination overall at the EMAs. The singer is very happy with the honor and says, “Having won this honor twice before, this third nomination feels especially meaningful. As an Indian artiste, it is a great honor to represent India on such a global platform, and it inspires me to cross boundaries and bring our unique voices to the world stage. It’s a surreal feeling.”

Armaan Malik insists that this year has been very poignant for his growth as an artist as he feels he has become the artist he wanted to be. He says, “I feel like I’m coming into my own with every song. I feel like I’m evolving into a whole other artist, the artist I always wanted to be, the artist I always believed I was and the artist I want to be.’

The singer credits this growth to his diversification into languages including English pop, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. “I believe I am a pan-India singer, not just a Hindi singer. As an artist, I am breaking the boundaries of my music by being able to collaborate with artists from different parts of the world, different genres. This gives me freedom to express myself. Being just a playback singer was very restrictive, but as an independent artiste, who is flying the flag of I-pop in India and across the world, I feel that I have the freedom to shape my music and shape my own music. I am able to have the freedom to give. Sound and artistry.”

Speaking about his collaboration with Callum AlwaysArmaan insists that “it felt natural from the beginning”. “We had this amazing connection, and the song came together in our very first session. Since Calum and I are both known for singing emotional love songs, we had a similar vibe. She inspired me to delve deeper into my feelings, and we began to understand what it was always meant to be – a pure, heartfelt love song,” he shares.

With artists like Diljit Dosanjh gaining international recognition and their shows selling out across the world, Armaan believes it is “a beautiful time for Indian artists”. “Even recently, all my shows in Hyderabad and Bengaluru have been sold out,” he says. I never thought that I would play a concert in a stadium in Hyderabad and sell 35,000 tickets. The level of love and enthusiasm that fans and listeners now have for Indian artists and the desire to see their music live is incredible.

The singer also talks about India becoming a favorite destination for Coldplay, Maroon 5 and other international artists who have upcoming shows in the country. “The whole atmosphere has changed and people like Ed Sheeran are coming to the country to collaborate with artists like me, and want to be on stage with us. For such big international events to come to our country, we also need to develop our entertainment infrastructure to host such a large audience. It’s slowly growing, and I think we’ll be a big destination for international artists. We are already there, but we will be even bigger in the future,” he says, stressing that Indian talent is also benefiting from this Western influx: “Not just international acts, but because of this whole movement, Indian artists. And Indian acts are becoming bigger than ever.”
