Taylor Swift, Tyla win at MTV Europe Music Awards

10 November –

Pop megastar Taylor Swift was the big winner at the MTV Europe Music Awards on Sunday, taking home four trophies at the ceremony in Manchester, England, which also included a tribute to late singer Liam Payne.

Swift, who led the nominations with seven, won Best Artist, Best Video, Best Live and Best US Act for her collaboration with Post Malone “Fortnite”. Currently in North America for his Eraz tour, he thanked fans through a video message.

“The fact that you honored the tour, with everything that’s happened this year with the album, with the video, is incredible,” said Swift, who released her latest album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” in April.

South African singer Tyla received three awards – Best Afrobeats, Best R&B and Best African Act.

The awards took place again after last year’s Paris event was canceled shortly after the start of the Gaza war, in which Israeli forces are fighting Hamas militants.

Held in a different city each year, the Sunday show took place at Manchester’s new Co-op Live venue.

Singer and third-time MTV EMA show host Rita Ora paid tribute to late One Direction member Liam Payne, who died after falling from a third-floor hotel room balcony in Buenos Aires last month. He was 31 years old.

An emotional Ora, who collaborated with Payne for the 2018 song “For You”, said, “He was a huge part of the MTV world and my world and I think that’s why you’re at home and here tonight. There are many.”

“He brought so much joy to every room he walked into and he left such a mark on this world.”

Other winners Sunday night included Sabrina Carpenter, whose hit “Espresso” won best song, Ariana Grande, who won best pop, and Eminem, who won in the best hip-hop category.

Best K-pop went to Jimin, Mexican singer Peso Pluma won best Latin, while Manchester native Liam Gallagher won best rock. American singer Benson Boone won the Best New Category award.

Other honorees included American rapper Busta Rhymes, who performed a medley of his hits and received the Global Icon Award, and Pop Pioneer Award recipients British electro-pop duo Pet Shop Boys, who closed the show.
