Denzel Washington in ‘Gladiator II’
There’s a shark in the Colosseum! This is one of the biggest achievements gladiator iiThe sequel to Ridley Scott’s 2000 blockbuster and Academy Award darling. Even though the comparison is disgusting, we are forced to go there gladiator ii Looks like a shadow next to the brute force charisma of the original.
The title sequence with some amusing animation reminds us of key scenes from the original, with the deranged Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) sticking out his tongue and Maximus’s (Russell Crowe) hands brushing the wheat stalks of his home. It also serves as foreshadowing for the upcoming film, mirroring the original in dialogue and visuals.
We are told that it has been 15 years since the death of Marcus Aurelius, the emperor who dreamed of returning Rome to its people. That dream has turned to ashes due to the corruption and greed prevalent in Rome. In Numidia, a man, Hanno (Paul Mescal), tends the land with his wife Arishat (Yuval Gonen). A Roman army led by Acacius (Pedro Pascal) attacks Hanno’s hometown.
Gladiator II (English)
director: Ridley Scott
mold: Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi, Connie Nielsen, Denzel Washington
run-time: 148 minutes
Story: A man loses his wife to the victorious Roman army and vows revenge by becoming a gladiator
Despite a valiant fight by the Numidians, the Romans were victorious, with Arishat killed and Hanno enslaved. Displaying intense fighting skills, including butchering a baboon, Hanno attracts the attention of gladiator owner Macrinus (Denzel Washington). And so it’s on to Rome for more gladiatorial battles, power struggles, coups and counter-coups, lots of blood, rhinos and jolly sharks swimming busily in a flooded area for a glimpse of verisimilitude in a recreation of a naval skirmish.
The way Hanno realizes his destiny, quoting Virgil. She remembers that he is Lucius, the son of Marcus Aurelius’ daughter Lucilla (Connie Nielsen reprises her role). Lucilla sent him to Numidia to protect him. He’s also Maximus’ son, which is a bit of a shock considering how the first film was driven by Maximus’ need to avenge the destruction of his family by Commodus.
The story is incomplete and the dialogues do not make much sense. The illogical plot jumps will require a whole new level of acting to give the characters credibility. However, like all epics the battles are exhilarating and bloody game of Thrones There are effects like.
As far as acting goes, Washington, the slave-turned-gladiator owner/arms dealer who dreams of ruling Rome, had the most fun. He wears his flamboyant attire and jewelery very attractively – with the gold chain and cloak shining brightly. The evil twin emperors Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Caracalla (Fred Hechinger) are mandatory camp. Pascal, as a civilized general who has grown tired of his emperors’ bloodthirst, looks a little lost, as does Mescal, whose character seems to change objectives from one scene to the next – he wants to kill the general. And then he wants to save it, he hates Rome and then he wants to save the Republic.
A scene from ‘Gladiator II’
The costumes are lovely but the production design is not as impressive as was expected from Scott. Ancient Rome is recreated half-heartedly and one is constantly taken out of the picture by looking for Black Adder (Tim McInerney, playing the show’s Percy, a senator addicted to gambling) or pirates from the Asterix comics. Which dangle from the frame. In the final count, while the battles and arena skirmishes are half-assedly exciting, and Washington moves through the scenes like a consummate professional, gladiator ii Has been let down by indifferent execution.
