Veteran West Coast rapper Saphir has died at the age of 54, his former Golden State Project groupmate Xzibit revealed.
Veteran West Coast rapper Safir has died at the age of 54. The Oakland star, whose real name was Reggie Gibson, died at 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday, November 19, his former Golden State Project groupmate Xzibit revealed.
Zibit shared a photo of Safir on Instagram, writing, “I can’t believe I’m writing this right now, but I don’t know what else to do right now. This morning at approximately 8:45, my brother Reggie, known to the world as Safir, passed away. We have so much history that I can’t even explain what I’m feeling right now. We surrounded him and told him how much we loved him. He can rest now.”
Zibbit said, “Friends, family, everyone from the hip hop community rocking with us, if you could be so solid and reach out to @chopblack’s little brother and @lilsaafir’s son, the family really needs support during this time. That’s all I need right now. I love you, brother.”
Safir’s cause of death has not been disclosed. However, the rapper struggled with several health issues over the years. As TMZ reports, a cancerous tumor was removed from his spinal cord, after which he began using a wheelchair. Sources told the outlet that Safir died in his hometown of Oakland, California.
Safir’s career
Zibit, Safir and Ras Kass were the rap trio comprising Golden State Project. People reported that Safir was also part of the digital underground. It was a rap group that was formed in 1987 with stars like Tupac Shakur and Shock G.
In addition to his rapping career, Safir also appeared in the 1993 blockbuster Menace II Society, where he starred alongside Jada Pinkett Smith, Samuel L. Played Harold Lawson with Jackson and Lorenz Tate. He was also featured on the film’s soundtrack. Safir later secured a record deal with the late Quincy Jones. Boxcar Sessions was Safir’s debut album.
