Matthew McConaughey on staying ‘true to himself’

When Matthew was asked why ‘staying true to yourself’ gave him the longevity of his career, he replied that ‘the devil is in an infinite number of yeses and no noes.’ He also explained why he feels that after success, no becomes more important than yes.

Before moving to Austin, Matthew lived with Camila in Malibu, California. In the early 2000s, the actor starred in several successful rom-coms such as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, The Wedding Planner, Failure to Launch and Fool’s Gold. He said he was paid well, but he wanted more for his career.

“That was my street and I liked that street,” he said. That lane paid well and was working. But that was the lane… I was so strong in that lane that anything outside of that lane, drama and things I wanted to do were, no, no, no, no, no, not McConaughey. Hollywood said, no, no, no, no, you should stay there, stay there.

The actor then moved to Texas and told Camila that he would only go back if he was offered roles he ‘wanted to do’. His wife was pregnant with their first child, and he realized that ‘ringing chimes and working in the garden doesn’t mean cutting it.’

Matthews once even turned down a $15 million role because it was not as ‘tempting’ as some other scripts to which he had said yes. “I think that was the one that I probably saw as the most rebellious move in Hollywood, because it really sent the signal, he’s not cheating. I think that’s why Hollywood went away, you know what? Now that’s a new novel idea. That’s a bright new idea.”

Matthew’s career

But it seems the move paid off as Matthews later signed on to Dallas Buyers Club, a role that earned him an Oscar and a salary of $200,000. Since then he has starred in blockbuster films such as Interstellar, The Wolf of Wall Street and Mud. He recently played a cameo as Cowboypool in Deadpool and the Wolverine and will soon star in The Rivals of Amaziah King and The Lost Bus.
