Angelina Jolie is opening up about the training she needed to find her singing voice to play opera singer Maria Callas in director Pablo Larraín’s biographical, psychological drama Maria. in one Interview With Good Morning America, the actor detailed why he described his opera lessons as ‘therapy,’ and said that at his first lesson, he took a deep breath and cried. During the interview, Angelina said, “What we all don’t realize is that all the different things that happen to us in our lives — I know you’ve gone through a lot of things — we carry them in our bodies. Everything is locked somewhere to help us keep going. And so to really sing, and to sing fully, you have to unlock all of that.
She then added, “So my first lesson, I took a deep breath and just cried… and then I left!”

In Maria, Angelina has lent her voice to play the role of the famous opera singer. The actor underwent rigorous vocal training and spent nearly seven months memorizing six tragic arias attributed to Callas, who died of a heart attack at his Paris home on September 16, 1977.
At its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September, Maria received an enthusiastic response and an eight-minute standing ovation. Since then, the film has premiered at the Toronto, Telluride, and New York film festivals. Angelina is getting a lot of buzz for earning an Oscar nomination in the lead actress category. She previously won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Girl, Uninterrupted.
During her final years in the 1970s, Maria follows Callas as she returns to Paris after years in the public eye. Starring Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Haluk Bilginer and Kodi Smit-McPhee, Maria premieres on Netflix on December 11.
