The Shawshank Redemption star Tim Robbins shares his concerns over the future of cinema. The actor, who is currently starring in the second season of Silo, sat down for an interview GuardianWhere he called for a growing trend to see algorithms that “give more priority to the same” over more creative tasks. Talking about the growing attraction towards streaming sites in recent years, the actor said, “You go on Netflix now, you see what movies are coming out and you tell me this is the future of cinema ? We are in big trouble.”

Tim used the example of The Shawshank Redemption to make his point about quality cinema that stands the test of time and how it was rejected by audiences at the time of its release. He further added, “We are now 30 years old [on from] Shawshank Redemption. When it came out it got good reviews, it was nominated for Academy Awards, but nobody saw it. it was vhs and [Ted] Turner is running it on his television channel [Turner Classic Movies] It changed him. That’s a favorite movie. It continues to top IMDb as the most loved film of all time. So I know that a quality movie, a quality television show, will endure. Whether it’s a hit or not is irrelevant compared to what people will think about it in 10, 15, 20 years.
Tim Robbins won an Oscar in the Best Supporting Actor category for 2003’s Mystic River, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Sean Penn. He currently stars in the Apple TV+ science-fiction series Silo, which is on its second season.
