International Emmys 2024: How comedian Vir Das created history by becoming the first Indian to host the global awards show

Vir Das may have started off as a simple artist doing standup comedy, but today he is a global phenomenon, representing India on international platforms. His latest achievement of hosting the 52nd edition of the International Emmy Awards has put him on the charts as a history maker as the first Indian to do so. The actor-comedian had announced the news on Instagram in September, with the caption, “Thank you for your support, an Indian Emmy host. I can’t wait to host @iemmys this year! Crazy. Keep me Thank you for this. Extremely honored and excited!”

After a plethora of awards, victory speeches and a few jokes, host Vir Das concluded the evening with a post on his Insta stories. The note read, “It was nice,” followed by a smiling emoji. If his wit and comic timing are anything to go by, we believe this statement.

But this great achievement would not be complete without a glimpse of his performance of the evening. And Veer Das did not disappoint his fans on this matter. On the next slide of his Instagram Stories, he shared a snippet of his hosting gig, where he enthralled everyone with his funny one-liners, synonymous with his style.

“All the major platforms are here tonight, and I humbly say that next year one of you should really broadcast this show. What do you think, yes?” He announced and everyone in the room happily agreed. “Who does Will Smith have to slap tonight to get people’s attention?” He asked jokingly, which made everyone laugh. He added, “I’m kidding foreigners, you can’t hit foreigners with anything but sanctions. Sorry, tariffs,” and couldn’t stop laughing.

As the awards night comes to an end, we take a look at all the other achievements that put Vir Das on the world stage. For those unaware, this was not the comedian’s first encounter with the Emmys. In 2021, he received his first Emmy nomination for his special Veer Das: For India. Even though he didn’t return home with an award that year, he found redemption soon after when he received the International Emmy Award for Best Comedy Series for the Netflix special Veer Das: The Landing.

Talking about the lineup of his comedy show, he is currently on the international Mind Fool Tour, whose shows are in every continent of the world except Antarctica. This will further strengthen his position in the world comedy circuit.
