From the flickering shores of the Philippines to the aquarium in the US and Europe, this unique discipline is holding the hearts globally. Now, for the first time, Visakhapatnam is getting the taste of this underwater spectacle with an exhibition of international mermaids.

Four professional Mermaids from the Philippines and Spain have brought the art of marmening to the city at the ongoing exhibition at the AU exhibition ground near the AU Convention Center on the beach. Inaugurated two weeks ago, the exhibition became a major attraction, in which visitors come to see underwater performance.

Mermaids dazzle the audience with their grace, remaining under water for two and a half minutes at a stretch without a mask of oxygen. With aquatic acrobatics and bright smiles, they create an experience, panting from the crowd.

Before entering the tank, mermaids dedicate two hours of rigid warm-up routine daily, including stretching and breathing exercises.

Many professional mermaids work with marine organizations around the world to promote permanent practices and protect marine ecosystems. “At the Ocean Park in the Philippine, where I train, we float with sea creatures in a controlled environment that mimics the ocean,” Kina says. “It is a way to help people to connect with marine life and understand why we need to protect it.”
