India’s views 2025: Veteran actor and filmmaker Amol Palekar discussed how cinematic excellence should not be determined in the Idea of India Summit 2025 of ABP Network only by box office earnings. A practical conversation was held with senior journalist Dibang titled ‘Art, Activism and Acting’.

Speaking on the first day of the ideas of the ABP network of India’s 2025 summit, Palekar highlighted the importance of real story telling in filmmaking. He cited Boman Irani’s recently released film ‘The Mehta Boys’ as an example of the gradually disappearing cinema in Bollywood.

Good movies should not be connected to box office numbers

When asked about the current dominance of South Indian films on Bollywood, Amol said: “I would like to ask a counter-praise-why do you connect a good film completely with its commercial success?”

“Nowadays, we are constantly told how much a film has earned – whether it earned an offect 400 crores or some Elite joined the box office club. But is this the only solution to the value of the film? Why does our understanding of cinema end? ,

The experienced actor also talked about promotional propaganda around commercial juggler such as ‘Bahubali’ and ‘RRR’, while small films struggle to gain proper recognition with adequate stories.

Palekar said, “In Malayalam cinema, the famous writer Mount Vasudevan Nair, who recently died, was formed a web series in his honor on an OTT platform. The series was based on his literary works, and featured top stars such as Mamooty and Mohanlal. Not only this, it was also presented by Kamal Haasan. Such a project is built in the south, but we mostly talk about RRR or Bahubali – we do not even accept such efforts? ,

Amol Palekar praised Mehta boys

Comparing between the past and the current filmmaking styles, Palekar commented that ‘The Mehta Boys’ is the essence of telling the story reminiscent of his era.

“The problem is that, we often lack courage to experiment, so we brainstorm the same kind of factory-made films,” he said.

Amol Pale on the influence of AI in cinema

Touching the increasing influence of artificial intelligence in cinema, the 80 -year -old icon accepted its role, but ensured that technology could never change human creativity.

“There is another step or big jump for the AI industry. A famous musician, Zakir Hussain, recently died. Their tabla and the sound created by them can easily be rebuilt and reproduced through AI, but still, the tabla played by them will have a human impact. AI is created by a human being, but it cannot replace human talent, ”he explained.
