Veteran sculptor Robin David has marked 50 years of his sculpture trip with ‘sculpting vods’, which is an exhibition cured by Aman Preet Kaur of Sirjanhara of Art Studio in Hyderabad. The showcase consists of 30 careful stone sculptures, which have been made over six years. From one to four feet high height and coined with black and white marble, these works come out of symmetry and rhythm. Emblazing abstraction, Robin invites the audience to interpret the pieces through his own approach, making each interaction an individual experience.

Can an empty space be attractive and expressive as a sculpture? In Robin’s stone sculptures, Voids are an integral part of their visual fiction. The exhibition provides insight into their creative process, discovering interconnection between solid forms and empty places to introduce a new dimension.

The 75 -year -old sculptor visited Hyderabad before organizing the seminars, but has never had a single exhibition in the city. In fact, he originally planned to demonstrate his works here after a preview in Bhopal. “But an art collector bought all my work within an hour, so I could not bring them here,” he remembers with a laugh.

Charm with stone

Robin’s attraction with stone began in Gwalior in 1974. A student of the Government College of Fine Arts, he played an important role in the establishment of the college’s sculpture department, which had earlier offered paintings only. “Our first batch was, only seven students – none of us knew how sculpture is,” he remembers.

Bavadi of a historic a plateau in Gwalior became his guru, as the students learned crafts by Chisling Stone with Hammers. Experience on this hand strengthened permanent love for Robin’s stone, although he has also used materials such as stainless steel and glass. Nevertheless, stone remains its primary source of inspiration.

Celebrating the sculptor

Curator Aman Preet Kaur has been associated with Robin David since her college days, first knowing her as a sculptor and later seen her own transition in curns. When he visited his home in Bhopal in November 2024, he was closed not only on the scale of his work, but also due to a remarkable journey. “He is more than a sculptor; She is a force of nature, a multi -woller artist whose path is anything, but traditional, ”she says.

A self-affected sculptor, Robin has created both monumental and minimum forms in decades. “He was also an integral part of building a defined cultural institution, Bharat Bhavan, but went away from the project due to the politics around it – an alternative that speaks of his unwavering artistic point of view,” she says. Cuicing ‘Sculpting Wods’ has given him an opportunity to immerse himself in his artistic world and celebrate his extraordinary heritage. “This exhibition is a tribute to an artist, which has not only shaped the stone, but also redefined the landscape of the Indian sculpture, which leaves behind the blanks that continue to resonate for a long time after being set under the chisel.”

During his 25 -year stay in Makran, Rajasthan, Robin made deep bonds with traditional artisans, drown himself in crafts, campaigning, learning, cooperating and teaching himself. His time was not only about sculpture, but also about honoring and maintaining centuries old techniques.

He has also worked on a series with Magsaysay Awards Rajendra Singh Bavadis (Stepwells), using your artistry to emphasize the importance of water conservation. Through these collaborations, Robin mixed traditional craftsmanship with contemporary concerns, ensuring that his work further enhanced both cultural and environmental importance.

Considering one of the pioneers of sculpture art in central India, Robin David participated and participated in several seminars in India and internationally including Mexico, Turkey and Italy. Their influence is beyond their own creations – they have trained around 100 artisans, who shape the next generation to the next generation of sculptors with their unconventional learning approaches.

Unlike traditional methods starting with drawing on stone before carving, Robin encourages aspiring sculptors to carve directly, to form a spontaneous relationship with the material. “Stone sculpting is a desired process. Be patient and listen to it. Make a relationship with your body and mind, and it will talk to you – you will know where to start, ”he says. His philosophy underlines the meditation of sculpture and immersive nature, turning it into a deep personal and transformative experience.

Sculpture Voids, a single exhibition by master sculptor Robin David, is in Phoenix Arena in Hyderabad until 16 March.
