2025 Oscars have come close, and one of the biggest winners of the night is Scene Baker, who took the award for the best director for his film Anora.

Baker’s acceptance speech was more than only one celebration of his achievement – this film was a call to the action to protect the future of theaters.

“We are here tonight and are watching this broadcast because we love films,” said Baker.

He said, “We love movies? In a movie theater … watching a film in the theater with a audience is an experience. We can laugh together, cry together, and, at a time in which the world can feel very divided, it is more important than ever.”

But Baker warned that this experience was in danger. He said, “This is a communal experience that you don’t get at home. And right now, the theater-swing experience is in danger,” he said, “the movie theater, especially independently owned cinemas, struggling,” he said.

“During the epidemic, we lost 1,000 screens in the US, and we continue to lose them regularly. If we do not reverse this trend, we’ll lose an important part of our culture,” he said.

Baker’s emotional petition was received with applause from the audience, and his message resonated with many people in the film industry.

As a self-exploited “Indie film Lifer”, Baker already knows the importance of independent film theaters in supporting new and innovative filmmakers.

Anora was an important and commercial success, and its Oscar win was the culmination of a long and successful award campaign.

The film was nominated for a total of six Oscars, including the best pictures, the best original screenplay and the best actress for Mickey Madison.
