Gajraj Rao can work in his sleep. Quite literal. A conscious slap moment in the new prime video comedy series Dupahiya Looks for Rao’s character, the principal of a kind but superstitious school, snoring on a cot, creates sweet music with those foolish, rumble, gutural sounds. Rao has the theater training, which is to confuse the crowd with bare equipment of materiality and behavior, and so hot and a comedian that we forget their nasteer roles (they have played the role of Mencing, Mysterious Caller in 2008 Aamir,

Perhaps Dupahiya Some could exploit Rao’s diligent nostrus to lend the zing. Built around a stolen motorcycle in a village, it is a ‘panchayat’ light, a sweet, soporific chain that passes on time, is highly flaky and forgetful. Director Sonam Nair, who made attractive Zani short film Itching Once, its depth is definitely out of the rural setting. Writing (by Chirag Garg and Avinash Dwivedi) is empty and amateur, with texture crumbly and other hand. The Audball Cast eliminates its craze in the first three episodes; Indulged for six more, they give the verge when they are annoying.

The series begins on a fertile note. Dhadakpur, a fictional village in Bihar, is to celebrate 25 years of going to ‘crime-free’. This is a difference built on extremely unstable ground: dowry, for example, is prevalent anywhere. Dhadakpur is only ‘crime-free’ because no one has filed an FIR in some time. Like Phulera, Dhadakpur is another listless, untoward, fly-swatting ideal, strangely stuck in tradition and time. It lacks lack of lack PanchayatAnd, even more harmful, the warmth and surprise of Malegaon.

Off-cilters stack with quests and crazy characters, Dupahiya Threatens to stall. Only Gajraj Rao, somehow, keeps rolling it. Although it was raised in Delhi, the actor has a face directly from a classic Bengali comic-strip. Their square, sociable features can curl into a smile or a scoul, with equal enthusiasm. Like Indian dads with the best meaning, Banwari is a patriarchy, yet we feel for it. He is a ‘temporary’ principal, but Rao is a permanent charmer.
