Zayn Malik has made a surprising confession about his time with One Direction that has fans going wild. The former band member, who was the first to leave the group at its peak, regrets not appreciating his time with the band. This admission comes on the heels of the announcement of his upcoming album, Room Under the Stairs, which is set to be released on May 17.
Zayn Malik regrets not enjoying his time in 1D
On March 25, 2021, Zayn broke millions of young hearts by announcing his departure from the band. Since, the singer has had an on-again, off-again relationship with the paparazzi and the spotlight. The From Dusk Till Dawn singer recently poured his heart out on the Zach Song Show, “When I look back at my life the main thing I always feel bad about is not enjoying the band enough.”
While saying that he is grateful to be happy now, Zayn expressed regret for taking things too seriously in the past. Addressing his time in One Direction, the band featuring Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson, he said, “I feel like I took things too seriously, you know? I am grateful that I am able to be happier now. I can really enjoy things and bring my own perspective a little bit, you know? Like, glass half full vs half empty. It’s my choice.”

After Zayn left the band, the remaining members attempted to revive the group, but ultimately their influence waned, disappointing fans of ‘Directors’ who had hoped for a reconciliation that never occurred. A year later, the band went on indefinite hiatus. Zayn was only 22 when he left the group, having joined as a teenager during the UK’s X-Factor. The Pillow Talk singer said that his childhood, “didn’t understand the importance of just trying to be happy.”
He added, “I had this thing going on in my mind, like this teenage angst thing – a chip on my shoulder.” “I’m like, ‘It’s really good to be in the mood all the time…’ This. Like, you’re just a loser. Let’s be honest, you know what I mean?” Zayn said that he has learned a lot of things from past experiences and has learned the importance of being a person that people want to be around.

The father of one also opened up about his personal life involving his former partner Gigi Hadid and their daughter Khai. The British singer and songwriter credits his personal growth and maturity to becoming a father to Khai, whom he shares with the supermodel. “She makes me happier,” he smiled. “I have so much love inside me that I didn’t have before she was born. She keeps laughing all day long. She wants to do silly things, and that gets her a lot of excitement, you know? He has a whole new outlook on life, [which] It was a bit gray for me.”
Gigi Hadid is reportedly dating Bradley Cooper, although the two have not made their relationship official yet. He can often be seen hanging out with friends in posh Hollywood restaurants. They were first linked in October 2023. Meanwhile, Gigi and Zayn broke up back in 2021.
