Mohini Ekadashi: Significance

Mohini Ekadashi is believed to be the day when Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of a beautiful apsara, Mohini. Mohini Ekadashi is celebrated by devotees every year to commemorate this occasion.

According to Hindu mythology, during Samudra Manthan, the nectar that came out of the ocean was churned, which led to a fight between the demons and the gods over who would drink it. To resolve the dispute, Devguru Brihaspati sought help from Lord Vishnu. To answer their prayers, Lord Vishnu emerged in the form of the sorceress Mohini, took the amrit kalash from the demons and distributed the ‘amrit’ among the gods.

Mohini Ekadashi 2024 Puja Rituals to Follow

– Wake up early, take holy bath and place the idol of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi on an altar, offer flowers, sweets and water.

-Start a strict fast from sunrise on the day of Ekadashi till sunrise the next day, refrain from drinking water even occasionally.

– During the fast, devotees engage in worship by offering flowers, incense and fruits to Lord Vishnu while chanting Vishnu mantras.

-Reciting or listening to Vishnu Sahasranama is considered extremely virtuous.

– Devotees do charity, visit temples of Lord Krishna for special prayers and hymns and listen to the story of Mohini Ekadashi for spiritual benefits.
