The grand French epic by Mathieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patellière, the revengeThe film made a spectacular debut at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday night, running to rapturous applause for nearly 12 minutes. This latest adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ timeless adventure novel premiered out of competition at the festival.
Earlier, Coralie Fargeat’s Substance The song, starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, topped the ovation at Cannes this year, receiving an 11-minute standing ovation.
The three-hour film features a star cast including Pierre Niney, Anais Demoustier, Laurent Lafitte, Pierfrancesco Favino, Annamaria Vartolomei and Bastien Bouillon, all of whom were present for the premiere. Niney plays Edmond Dantès, a young man who is wrongly imprisoned on his wedding day due to a sinister plot hatched. After serving a rigorous 14-year sentence in the island prison of Chateau d’If, Dantès escapes and makes a fortune. Transformed into the mysterious Count of Monte-Cristo, he seeks revenge on those who betrayed him.
Delaporte and de la Patellière, who also co-wrote the screenplay, are no strangers to Dumas adaptations, having collaborated on a two-part 2023 film the three Musketeers.
The film’s opening was made even more significant by the announcement that Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired distribution rights in the US, and plans to release it later this year. In France, Pathé will bring the revenge The film will have a wide release in theatres on June 28.
