“You once said that music is not just your profession, but the reason for your existence. This passion, coupled with your commitment to giving back to the community, connects deeply with our philosophy at NISAU,” said Sanam Arora, President of NISAU UK, in her speech at the ceremony.

He added, “We strive to empower, lead, and inspire you, principles that you embody through your actions every day. You are not just a music icon, but a bridge connecting hearts, minds, and nations through music; and fostering community through your philanthropic efforts, whether it’s your fight for artists’ rights or your advocacy for gender equality by launching the world’s first transgender band.”

The honorary fellowship, which has previously been awarded to actress Shabana Azmi, author Javed Akhtar and spiritualist Sri Sri Ravishankar among others, honours individuals who make a significant impact on Indian cultural exchange, education and social reform on the world stage.

“I am deeply overwhelmed to hear and read such kind words for me. Thank you NISAU for your love and this honour. I consider this another precious gift from our Almighty,” said Nigam on receiving the honour.

The 50-year-old multi-platinum selling Bollywood playback singer and Padma Shri concluded his UK-wide tour with concerts in London, Leeds, Glasgow and Birmingham, part of a concert series celebrating 30 years of his chart-topping cinematic numbers including ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’, ‘Shukr Allah’ and ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’.
