Akshay Kumar, who earlier faced criticism for holding Canadian citizenship, regained his Indian citizenship last year. The actor explained that he acquired Canadian citizenship during a challenging period when his films were not performing well, prompting him to consider working in Canada. However, when his films started becoming successful, he decided to abandon that plan. Akshay also shared that he had applied for Indian citizenship “a long time ago” during the pandemic, but he got it only last year.
During his appearance in Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2024, Akshay Kumar said, “I had applied for it a long time ago, during the Covid pandemic.” Regarding his decision to take Canadian citizenship, Akshay said, ‘My films were not working at that time. And everyone should work, I was getting some work in cargo there with a friend of mine. But then my two films came for release and they became hits. Then I got a lot of hits and I forgot about it (Canadian citizenship).”
Akshay Kumar further said, “I am Indian in mind, heart and soul. It will always be there. So I never cared about it. But about 3-4 years ago, I had said on this platform that I will.” Leave it. It took some time and last year, exactly on 14th or 15th August, I got my passport.”
Last year, on the occasion of Independence Day, Akshay Kumar shared a picture of his official government documents on X (formerly Twitter). The actor announced that he has finally got Indian citizenship. The side note read, “Heart and citizenship, both Indians. Happy Independence Day! Jai Hind,
