Parasite, Titane, Triangle of Sadness, Anatomy of a Fall, Anora. What is the common link between these films? That all five of these films won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. But there is also another common link that connects all of them. It is NEON, a small American studio that has backed the release of these films in US cinemas. What else? Parasite won the Oscar for Best Film, while Anatomy of a Fall won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay last year. About Neon

NEON was founded by Tom Quinn and Tim League. The distributor released its first film in 2017, the Anne Hathaway-starrer Colossal. The following year was a significant one, capped off by the release of the film I, Tonya, which won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Allison Janney. NEON sees a need to incorporate fresh voices and promote original and unconventional stories in a way that makes sense.

Over the past few years, Cannes has proven to be a huge success for the distribution house, as films from the festival are bought long before their release. Their film Parasite not only won the Palme d’Or, but also proved to be their biggest success to date, grossing nearly $263 million worldwide.

Christian Parkes, Chief Marketing Officer of NEON, explained deadline“We looked at how Hitchcock released his films, and (producer) William Castle, we took some of that to give this film its own voice… Bong is the master magician, and just when you think the film is going in one direction, he moves in that direction. That’s the position we were forced into in the marketing. We wanted to lead people down a path, establish the concept of suspense, so that Bong could live on in the theater as the master magician.” The film became the first non-English language film to win the Best Picture Oscar.

After Enora won the Palme d’Or this week, all eyes are on how NEON does the same again this time. Sean Baker’s film revolves around the life of a young sex worker, played by Mickey Madison. Screen Daily Speaking about his approach to film acquisitions, Jeff Deutschman said, “It’s those rare films that break through the noise and are unique enough to compel people to leave their homes for a movie – that’s the only rule we apply to everything we do.”
