Where does Rahman keep his awards?

“I have kept the international awards in Dubai because it was wrapped in a towel… my mother had it wrapped in a towel. He thought it was gold. So after he passed away, I went to his room, took them out and I gave it to Dubai Firdous Studios. It is in a nice showcase at Firdaus Studios,” revealed Rahman. He won two Oscars, two Grammys, a BAFTA and a Golden Globe for Danny Boyle’s 2008 film Slumdog Millionaire, most notably for the track Jai Ho, sung and written by Sukhwinder Singh. By Gulzar.

Meanwhile, back home, Rahman has six National Awards and over 32 Filmfare Awards (Bollywood + South) to his name. He revealed in the same interview that he keeps Indian awards in a special room in his hometown Chennai. He said, “Some of the awards did not reach me. I think some directors kept them as souvenirs.”

Rehman on mother’s contribution

In recent conversation With Netflix India, Rehman revealed how his mother helped him during his struggling days. “When I built my studio, I didn’t have money to buy an amplifier or an equalizer. There was just an AC with a shelf and carpet. I used to sit there and I didn’t have money to buy anything. I made it and was sitting inside without any equipment. My first recorder came when my mother pawned her jewelry. That’s when I felt empowered. I could see my future, in that one moment I was changed,” he said. Karima Begum died in 2020.
