Arjun Kanungo talks about his recovery from kidney and hip injuries, and losing 30kg after reaching 117kg. He now feels grateful, confident and inspired for new music.
If there’s one thing Arjun Kanungo is as passionate about as he is his music, it’s his dedication to physical well-being. The 34-year-old singer-songwriter recently opened up about an unexpected setback in his fitness journey: a hip injury he suffered in February last year after a fall in the Maldives while he was with his wife, model-actress Carla Dennis. This required intensive physical therapy, which cured his kidney disease. outcome? With a weight gain of 30 kg, he reached his heaviest ever weight of 117 kg and 31% body fat.
“I was the heaviest I’d ever been in my life,” the singer recalls 18 months after the incident. He further added, “Looking at myself, I had lost all my confidence. I couldn’t face the camera or even go out. It felt like I had lost a part of me.”
Refusing surgery on his hip, Kanungo committed to six months of rigorous physiotherapy, a difficult process that left him confined to his bedroom with minimal physical activity. Kanungo, who was once a national-level basketball player and shooter, admits, “Physiotherapy is not for everyone. It is intense, and it took a toll on my mental and physical condition.”
Looking back, Kanungo, who now weighs 87 kg and has 8% body fat, feels the experience has changed his perspective.
“It gave me a new perspective on life. I’ve become more humble and grateful for everything, especially how my body reacts now. I’m finally happy with how I look and feel,” he says. , hinting that his newfound confidence may even influence his upcoming music.
