Cher reveals her ex-husband Sonny Bono once thought about killing her
During her marriage to Bono, which lasted from 1964 to 1975, Cher was at one point so depressed that she contemplated suicide by jumping off the balcony of a Las Vegas hotel room. She wrote in her memoir that in October 1972, she confessed to her then-husband that she wanted to sleep with Bill, his band’s guitarist.
Cher said in her memoir that although she didn’t really mean it, she thought it was the only way to get Bono to take her request for a separation seriously. “The silence was deafening. Then [Sonny] Said, ‘How much time do you think you’ll need?'” the Burlesque actress wrote. “Two hours,” she said before leaving Bono with Bill, on whose shoulder she cried.
The estranged couple, who starred together on their hit show The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, have finally agreed to separate. However, Bono allowed this on one condition – Cher would have to continue living with him during the week to maintain her public image.
One morning, he surprised her by saying, “You know, after going with Bill to the Sahara that night, I seriously thought about throwing you off our balcony,” Cher wrote in her memoir. He said, “He laughed a little bit at it and so did I. It was crazy that he was telling me that.”
The Strong Enough singer added, “He added: ‘I thought I’d plead crazy like Spade Cooley and I’d go to jail for seven years before being released. Then I’d get a book deal and my own show. However, she surprised him by making this shocking admission that “There was no need to push me because I was going to jump!”
