Chris is in no mood to side with Marvel haters
Chris said, “It felt harsh, and it bothers me, especially with heroes. Chris said, “It was kind of a wink to me, people were bashing the superhero space,” adding, “Those people had movies that didn’t work – we all have. When they talked about this I talked about what was wrong with superheroes, so I thought, great, let me tell this to the billions of people who watch them. Were they all wrong?”
When it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Chris is part of the universe as Thor. He entered the world of superheroes with a standalone film in 2011, went on to star in three sequels and star in multiple Avengers films through 2022.
He stressed that ‘the trend of cinema has changed not because of superheroes, but because of smartphones and social media.’ “Superhero movies really kept people in theaters during that transition and now people are coming back. So they deserve a little more appreciation,” he stressed.
The actor also criticized actors who have spoken negatively about their experiences while shooting superhero films. However, he did not take anyone’s name directly.
He said he finds it difficult when actors talk about a project with “guilt or shame”, as he feels the need to show humility towards the team he has worked with. That being said, Chris doesn’t deny that there is a “superhero curse” because one feels pigeonholed.
About Marvel Criticism
This was in 2019 when Martin criticized superhero films. This was the same year when Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame broke box office records and their film The Irishman was released on Netflix.
“That is not cinema. Honestly, the closest I can think of them that are well-crafted, with actors doing their best given the circumstances, is a theme park. This is not a human cinema that is trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being. Martin told Empire That October. The Oscar winner later clarified that his disappointment was not with the quality of the Marvel films but with their dominance in the market.
In 2022, Francis Ford expressed his agreement with Martin’s idea in an interview gq magazine, He said, “There used to be studio films there. Now there are Marvel pictures. And what is Marvel Pictures? A Marvel picture is a prototype film that is made over and over again to be different.
Avatar filmmaker James Cameron has also criticized the MCU’s approach to character creation. They told the new York Times, “When I look at these big, splashy movies — I’m looking at you, Marvel and DC — it doesn’t matter how old the characters are, they all behave like they’re in college. They have relationships, but not really. They never hang up their relationships because of their children. The things that truly empower us and give us strength, love, and a purpose? Those characters don’t have that experience, and I think that’s not the way to make films.”
In 2018, director and two-time Oscar-winning actor Jodie Foster compared superhero films to fracking in an interview with Radio Times, and claimed that Marvel and DC films were “ruining” the world’s viewing habits.
