Deadpool and Wolverine earned $205 million in ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada this weekend, marking the biggest domestic opening of the year. The film also had the best opening ever for an R-rated picture, more than doubling the ticket sales of Warner Bros.’ Joker in its first weekend. Joker became the highest-grossing R-rated film in history, earning over $1 billion at the box office after its 2019 release.
Deadpool and Wolverine, which stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman reprising their roles as the foul-mouthed superhero and X-Men mutant, respectively, is the third installment in the Deadpool franchise. Disney acquired the film and television rights to the characters following its $71.3 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox in 2019, and considers them some of the most important intellectual property to come with the deal, along with Avatar.
The success of Deadpool and Wolverine has energized the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a slate of 34 interconnected films that make up the most successful movie franchise in Hollywood history, grossing more than $30 billion at the box office. After overloading audiences with a large number of pictures, the sprawling superhero genre has fared poorly in recent years, with releases such as Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels, as well as DC’s The Flash and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, failing to recoup their production budgets.
Deadpool and Wolverine have accelerated the pace of turnaround at Disney’s film division, which hasn’t turned a profit since April 2022. Globally, the film sold $438 million worth of tickets. Prior to this, Inside Out 2 had the biggest opening weekend of the year in the US and Canada. It has grossed $1.46 billion at the box office since its release in June.
