Everyone wants risky films: Manoj Bajpayee on the future of theatrical cinema

The much awaited Netflix thriller Inspector Zende is already creating waves with its dark, entertaining story, which examines the chilling psyche of serial killer Karl Bhojraj (played by Jim Serb) and has been depicted by the National Awards Actor Manoj Bajapay.

Talking about the project and industry on a large scale, Bajpayee recently made a striking observation about the current status of dramatic cinema. Bajpayee was asked about the ongoing OTT vs dramatic conversation with Sonal Kalra season 2 produced by Gautam Thakar films, and whether streaming stars now get payment with big screen actors.

Before adding more serious notes, “I don’t get money,”: “Today, the actors are not even being paid, because they are being told that it is risky to put in money and lacks a budget. Even those who are releasing films in theaters, are not paying. Everyone wants to make it a risk-free project.”

Bajpai’s clear comment highlighted a major trend in Bollywood, where financial precautions often oversee creative risk, in which studios prefer to hedge their stakes rather than investing in bold, unconventional stories.
