Divyendu and Radhika Apte’s film sister love It recently had its world premiere at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. In a special conversation with NDTV, Divyendu talked about his love for arthouse cinema. The actor revealed that he had always planned to do artistic films after passing out from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), but somehow stopped doing commercial films. He said, “I had always planned that after graduating from FTII, I would do arthouse, have nothing to do with so-called “commercial cinema”, but as luck would have it, I started with a commercial film. Divyendu said that today there is not much difference between parallel and commercial cinema as the audience cares more about the content than the actors featured in the project. He said, “I think now the lines between art and commercial cinema have also become blurred. Today the audience is very smart. When they watch a trailer and see something about a movie, they decide at that very moment whether they will watch that movie or not. He doesn’t care who the star is in the film, on which platform it will be released or what the language of the film is. They watch the trailer and decide on the merits whether they want to watch the film or not.”
Talking about his process of selecting films, the actor said, “I think I sign films that I would love to see on screen. Then there are other factors such as who is supporting or directing the project. Gone are the days when you could just make a film based on emotions or story, film making is a collective effort and everyone has to come together to make a film.
