Paolo Sorrentino’s latest directorial debut, parthenopeThe film basked in glory at the Cannes Film Festival as it received a remarkable 9.5-minute standing ovation on Tuesday night.
The acclaimed director embraced the film’s stars, including Gary Oldman, Celeste Della Porta and Stefania Sandrelli, amid tears of joy and overwhelming emotion, as confirmed Diversity. Sorrentino himself, recalling that poignant moment, expressed his gratitude to Cannes General Delegate Thierry Frémaux, and acknowledged the important role of the festival in his illustrious cinematic journey that began two decades ago. Sorrentino shared with the audience, “For me, this film is a celebration of my life’s journey.”
The Italian auteur, renowned for his distinctive style and profound storytelling, has left an indelible mark on Cannes over the years. With seven films competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or and past accolades including the Festival’s Jury Prize and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury, Sorrentino’s impact on the Festival is undeniable.

Gary Oldman’s portrayal of American writer John Cheever, who found inspiration for his short stories in Italy, adds further depth to the story. Sorrentino praised Oldman’s versatility, commenting, “He’s one of the top five actors in the world. He can play anything.”
