Buddhists and Hindus around the world celebrate Buddha Purnima to mark the birth anniversary of Gautama Buddha. In 2024 it will be celebrated on Thursday, May 23. It is believed that Buddha – which means ‘the Awakened One’ – was born in Lumbini, in what is now Nepal, to royal parents of the Shakya clan, before renouncing the material world. Born as Prince Siddhārtha Gautama, Buddha left his home and the materialistic world at the young age of 29. According to legends, once on a royal ride, he met a corpse and a sick old man, which inspired him to seek answers to the mysteries of life. He renounced the material world and became a wandering ascetic and spiritual teacher. His teachings are the foundation of Buddhism. Buddha Purnima is celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Vaisakha, which falls in April or May.
