Jamie Foxx, during the live taping of his upcoming Netflix special, Jamie Foxx: What Happened Was…. shared her harrowing experience while filming the special in Atlanta, Georgia last October.
People Magazine cited an audience member, Demecos Chambers, who claimed Foxx talked about being “literally seconds and moments away from death” after his medical emergency in April 2023.
Chambers explained that Fox’s health crisis arose from “pure exhaustion” as his body became weak due to age and overwork. Although Fox was shooting the Netflix film Back in Action with Cameron Diaz in Georgia at the time of the incident, he did not collapse on set. “When he passed out, he thought he had just passed out for a few moments,” Chambers recalled.

“He basically passed out in an elevator and thought he woke up a few hours later. Well, he was actually in a coma and didn’t wake up until a few weeks later.
Fox’s daughter’s guitar music helped him come out of coma
Chambers revealed that one of Fox’s daughters regularly played guitar for him when he was unconscious. “She’s playing one of his favorite songs or whatever on a daily basis,” he said. “And he said that’s the only thing he can remember hearing in his sleep, and it essentially brought him out of the coma.”
“He had to start from day one,” he expressed, adding, “When he’s telling the story, he’s throwing in bits left and right. This is stand-up comedy. He is dancing a little. He is playing songs on the piano.”
The Netflix special, set to premiere on December 10, released a trailer where Fox thanked the audience, saying, “I’m back, and I’m so happy to see you all here. I am very happy to be here.” Teasing the story of his health scare, he quips, “What happened…” before the trailer closes dramatically.
