Kangana Ranaut’s reaction to the protest against emergency by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee

Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’ is embroiled in yet another controversy after its release on Friday, January 17, 2025. Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) in Punjab has started protests against the screening of actress Kangana Ranaut’s film ‘Emergency’.

Demonstrations have begun across Punjab in Amritsar, Ludhiana and Patiala, where protesters are demanding the Punjabi government to ban the film due to its depiction of Sikh history and the events of 1984. Kangana Ranaut, who acted and directed the film ‘Emergency’, said on the social media platform, I respect all religions very much and after studying and growing up in Chandigarh, I have closely observed and followed Sikhism. The SGPC expressed strong objection to Kangana’s film and shared a letter on its official social media handle with a caption in Punjabi that read, “Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee strongly objects to Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency. Have expressed objection, which tarnishes the image.” Regarding the film which misrepresents Sikhs and history, he has demanded a ban on its release in Punjab on January 17, 2025. In this regard, Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, Chairman of Shiromani Gurdwara Management Committee, has written a letter to Chief Minister Shri Bhagwant Mann. The letter states that if this film is released, there will be outrage and outrage in the Sikh world, hence it is the responsibility of the government to ban this film in the state. If it is released, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee will strongly oppose it. In this regard, a demand letter has also been sent to all the Deputy Commissioners of Punjab.

Meanwhile, All India Kisan Congress President Sukhpal Singh Khaira also supported SGPC’s statement and retweeted their post with a caption that said, “I am a well-known critic of farmers, banning the film Emergency directed by @KanganaTeam Support @SGPCAmritsar’s demand to impose ” Without knowing the contribution of Sikhs towards our country, SGPC is our elected representative body and @BhagwantMan should take immediate steps to ban the film which portrays Sikhs in a bad light and defames them. Our state Punjab and its people-Khaira.”
