Matthew Macfadyen, best known for playing Mr Darcy in Joe Wright’s 2005 romantic drama Pride & Prejudice, has captivated audiences with his charming on-screen presence in the film for the past 20 years.
The 49-year-old English actor has gained prominence over the past few years with other successful on-screen appearances in Succession, Operation Mincemeat, Anna Karenina, and now he will be seen in the latest Marvel release Deadpool vs. Wolverine.
‘Not attractive enough’
In a recent interview Anthony Masons on CBS Sunday MorningHe revealed that he did not enjoy playing Mr. Darcy as much as in the film, and said he wished he had enjoyed it more and been “less anxious”.
“I feel bad saying this, but I did it, I had moments when I thought I wish I’d enjoyed it more, I wish I’d worried about it less. I thought maybe I felt a bit wrong or I’m not that attractive, or I’m not, you know, but it worked out. I think probably the most flattering thing to happen to me now is that people say, ‘Well you’re Mr Darcy,’ and that’s a pretty good 20 years later, so I guess I can’t be aging so badly.”
Fans disagree
Fans of the actor commented on the video, pointing out that his portrayal of Mr Darcy in the film was not perfect at all. “He was not able to enjoy the filming because he was so worried about the role, that’s why he has such extreme Darcy energy,” wrote a fan. “Matthew you are probably the most Darcy Darcy ever,” said another. “You are the child of our Roman Empire,” assured another female fan. “Sir, your mere hand flexion makes women all over the world swoon. Isn’t it quite charming?! Absurd!!!,” another joked.
In 1995 actor Colin Firth, who played Darcy in the Pride & Prejudice TV series, was cast alongside Matthew Macfadyen in John Madden’s Operation Mincemeat. The interviewer asked, “Have you ever compared notes on your Darcys?”, to which Macfadyen replied, “Yes, very extensively,” He claimed that playing the two Darcys together was a fun experience, They talked more about their time working together for the film.
Matthew also revealed that his thoughts and feelings upon being cast in Darcy were similar to Colin’s. Reflecting on people’s perception of the character of Darcy, Matthew said, “You know she’s one of those iconic characters that you think people feel quite proprietary about.”
