Studio Ghibli awarded the Honorary Palm d'Or at Cannes

They say nothing good happens after 3 a.m., but something great definitely happens at midnight — that’s the new album from Australian duo Cosmo Midnight, “Stop Thinking and Start Feeling.” Their third full-length aims to inspire listeners to let go of their inner self-resentment and surrender to the magic of reinvented EDM disco funk.

EDM is a bit of a misnomer for their style, as the music somewhat resembles playful, electronic funk – you can hear influences such as Daft Punk and Nile Rodgers and his group Chic.

Cosmo’s Midnight, made up of twins Cosmo and Patrick Liney, have been working hard on their craft since 2012. They’ve been working on this particular album for three years; it was born as a post-pandemic meditation and release. The band travelled to London, the US and Australia to work on the album, where they found artistic like-minded people in the form of an eclectic list of collaborators.

“Bang My Line” sees TK Maidza add a little rap to his groove mix, while “Gimme Some More” features cute beats from Zimbabwean-American artist Shungudzo. “Can’t Do Without” features the sounds of Island Bird and the party spills onto the dance floor. From “Fantasy” featuring dance-pop duo Frank Moody to “Borrowed Time” with Australian singer-songwriter Forest Claudette, there’s catchy funk, modern disco, retrofitted EDM, and sexy everything in between.

If this album is a success the third time around, the band may be onto something new – and hopefully gain musical recognition outside of Australia. Perhaps everyone can learn to relax and feel the rhythm like Cosmo’s Midnight.
