The NGT took note of waste management violations after a concert, noting that the stadium was filled with garbage, disrupting athletes’ training.
The National Green Tribunal has ordered immediate action to renovate the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here following the “chaotic outcome” of the Diljit Dosanjh concert last month in which the stadium’s running track was filled with garbage.
Taking suo motu cognizance of the issue based on a news report, the tribunal said, “This case indicates violation of solid waste management rules and the Environment Protection Act.”
In an order passed on November 19, a bench led by NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Srivastava said, “After the concert, the stadium grounds were littered with garbage, including broken glass bottles, beer cans, plastic wrappers and Other trash was involved and there was dirt.” So significant that athletes were seen trying to clean the stadium, but their efforts were in vain due to the sheer scale of the damage.”
The bench, which also included expert member A Senthil Vel, said that the track of the stadium was closed for about 10 days after the concert, causing disruption in the training of the athletes, who were given low-maintenance warm-ups outside the main stadium. Was forced to go to the track.
The NGT order said that as per reports, in the absence of dustbins at the venue, a large number of attendees threw garbage like pizza boxes, water bottles and empty beer bottles on the track.
It underlined that “considerable time” had passed since the incident.
“Therefore, we dispose of the original application by directing the Member Secretary, Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to ensure immediate action to restore the stadium to its original condition as it existed before the event and remove all the debris. And the garbage which was thrown away during the event should be completed within two weeks,” the tribunal said.
The concert was held on 26 and 27 October and according to the Sports Authority of India, over 70,000 people attended the event.
