The 97th Academy Awards held at the Dolby Theater at Los Angeles on Sunday (2 March) watched less viewers than last year.
According to the Nielsen Fast National Rating, the Oscar telecast ABC and Hulu were an estimated 18.07 million spectators, the Hollywood reporter said. This was the first time the glitter awards function was being streamted live.
However, Hulu faced several technical glits throughout the evening. Some users also complained that the last two awards of the night were not able to see.
The total spectators’ count saw a sharp decline of about 7 percent compared to 2024. At that time, the number of spectators reached 19.49 million despite the absence of a live stream.
However, the Oscar showed signs of a bounce between adults between the ages of 18 and 49 years. In addition, 18 to 34 demographic recorded its highest post-pandemic numbers, indicating growing interest among young audiences.
Broadcasting earned 3.92 ratings in the age group of 18–49, which is equal to 5.25 million viewers.
The figures indicate a slight increase from the 3.82 ratings of the previous year. The 2025 Oscar recorded the second largest spectators since 2020, behind the 4.03 rating of only 2023 ceremony.
The Oscar rated 3.17 among the audience in the age group of 18-34. It was the highest rating for the ceremony in that age group since the epidemic with approximately 2.27 million spectators.
