Pakistani celebrities social media accounts live-block again in India

Social media accounts of many Pakistani celebrities were re-blocked on Thursday (July 3, 2025), when they were summarized for users in India-a development that triggers sharp reactions in social media platforms.

Some of the pre -banned profiles were visible on Wednesday (July 2, 2025), allegedly due to a technical mess. However, after bringing the issue into the attention of the authorities, the material was once again geopolized and is no longer accessible in India.

In view of the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the Union Home Ministry recommended blocking 16 YouTube channels in Pakistan. These were accused of spreading stimulating and communally sensitive materials, false stories and misinformation that targeted India, its armed forces and security agencies.

The list of banned YouTube channels includes major media outlets like Don News, Arya News, Sama TV, Bol News, and Jio News, as well as other channels such as Irshad Bhatti, Rafar, Pakistan reference, Sama Sports, GNN, Uzair Cricket, Omar Joama Antik, Asma Shree Raib Persia,

In addition, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had issued an advice for over-the-top (OTT) platforms, media streaming services and digital middlemen in India, instructing them to close web series, movies, films, songs, pdcasts and other forms of media content arising from Pakistan.

Citing national security views, the advisor said, “Many terrorist attacks in India have been established to have a cross-border connection with the Pakistan-based state and non-state actors … On 22 April, the terrorist attack in Pahgam hurt many Indians, a Nepali citizen, and a number of injuries.”

Quoting Part III of the rules of information technology (arbitration guidelines and digital media ethics code), 2021, Ministry underlined the responsibilities of material publishers on OTT platforms. It also referred to Rule 3 (1) (B) of Part II of IT Rules, 2021, determining that middlemen should ensure that users do not upload or share the materials that “putting in unity, integrity, defense, safety or sovereignty of India, danger with foreign states, friendly relations with foreign states, or public orders”.
