Playback singer P Jayachandran passes away at 80 after prolonged illness


Thrissur (Kerala):

Renowned playback singer P Jayachandran, who was fondly called ‘Bhava Gayakan’ for his soulful renditions that beautifully expressed emotions like love, longing and devotion, passed away on Thursday evening.

He died at a private medical college in Thrissur, Kerala after treatment for cancer. He died at the age of 80.

According to hospital resources, the singer died around 7.55 pm on Thursday evening.

He also said that he was unwell for some time and was taken to hospital after he collapsed at his residence on Thursday.

The singer, who has recorded over 16,000 songs in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi, is widely recognized for his contribution to Indian music.

He had won many awards for best playback singer.

He was awarded the National Film Award and the JC Daniel Award of the Government of Kerala for his outstanding contribution to cinema.

Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar expressed grief over Jayachandran’s demise.

“His captivating voice, which has enthralled audiences for six decades, will continue to bring solace to the hearts of people,” the Governor said.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the journey of the song beyond time and space has stopped. He said that Jayachandran was a singer who captured the hearts of people across India throughout the era.

He further added, “It can be said that there is no Malayali who has not been influenced by Jayachandran’s songs. Be it through film songs, light music, or devotional songs, the songs sung by him Each note found its place in the hearts of the listeners.”

Vijayan said that what distinguishes Jayachandran’s vocal expression from his contemporaries is the specificity of his emotions.

The CM concluded, “History will remember him as a singer who made an extraordinary contribution in bringing the art of vocal music to the common people. Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, VD Satheesan, described Jayachandran as one of those rare voices which a music lover feels like listening to again and again.

He said that for five decades, Jayachandran’s voice has enthralled many generations.
