Ranbir Kapoor recalls sweet moments spent with grandfather Raj Kapoor, reveals he was bribed with 'Caramel Toffee'

Mumbai: Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor took a trip down memory lane and recalled how his grandfather and late icon Raj Kapoor used to give him “caramel toffee” along with sisters Riddhima, Karisma and Kareena.

The actor was at IFFI 2024, where he was seen discussing his late grandfather. He said, “Ever since I have been in the film industry, I have always been asked this question wherever I have gone. I remember him as a kid, Grandpa, who was a big man with blue eyes, where me and my sister, when we would go to his house, he would take us to his room and make these caramel toffees. Used to hide it in his fridge. ,

He recalled how he used to make cousins Kareena, Karisma, his sister Riddhima and himself sit in a line.

“And he would ask us to salute him, and sing Awara Hoon, and give him a kiss on the cheek. And then we were bribed with caramel toffee. That’s why my memories related to him are very personal.

Ranbir told that when he started understanding films, he got a chance to know more.

“That’s when I started to understand who he was, what his contributions were. Of course, I am the first grandson named Kapoor in the family, so I definitely got a lot of love and attention. When my mother fired me from my job or yelled at me, I would call her. And he used to call my mother and fire her from her job. So I also used it as leverage.

Like every grandchild has with his grandfather, Ranbir also had a similar relationship with Raj Kapoor.

“He passed away when I was six years old. And I still remember that, of course, I didn’t know what death was and all that stuff. But we were in Devnagar Cottage. And all the children were playing upstairs. And we were looking down into the garden. And we could just see a sea of people.

“I have never seen so many people in my life. And that day I really understood, okay, this guy has some status, some value. He has done something. That is why so many people have come to pay their respects. So that memory will always be with me, especially when they took away his body. And the entire Chembur Road was filled with people. So these are my earliest memories of him.
