Francis Ford Coppola is coming up with his first film in 13 years, Megalopolis, which is a sci-fi epic. However, when he shared the poster of the film on his Instagram handle, a fan asked him why he doesn’t do “normal films” like Batman or Star Wars. Coppola responded
Francis responded to the user’s comment, writing, “Because you already have good Batman and Star Wars movies. Aren’t you curious to see something you’ve never seen before?” “Something different, something with a different perspective. Something that feels new. Something we can feel we can’t even understand. It’s this question that inspires new creativity,” he added.
Internet response
Francis took the complaint in stride, but many other Instagram users did not. One of them responded, “Imagine saying this to the guy who directed The Godfather and Apocalypse Now.” Another wrote, “Why should he do this? There are so many movies like that.” “Because he’s not traditional,” one user argued.
About Megalopolis
Francis’ $120 million Roman epic, set in a futuristic New York, hits theaters, including IMAX screens, on Sept. 27. It had its first premiere earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival, where the film received mixed reviews but widespread praise for its daring.
The film stars Adam Driver as Cesar, an artist-inventor who dreams of a utopian metropolis but is at odds with the city’s mayor (Giancarlo Esposito). It also co-stars Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Laurence Fishburne, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman.
Coppola considered Megalopolis for decades and eventually financed it himself by selling off portions of his vast wine empire. It is his first film in 13 years, following his 2011 horror film Twixt. Megalopolis has been picked up for distribution in the US and Canada by Lionsgate Films.
Francis, 85, has won five Oscars in his decades-long career. His works include the gangster epic Godfather trilogy, Apocalypse Now, The Conversation and The Rainmaker. He has also produced films such as his daughter Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides.
