Varanasi: Students staged a massive protest on Friday demanding the removal of a mausoleum located in the Uday Pratap College (UP College) campus. Around 500 students raised saffron flags and raised slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ at the college gate. The protesting students tried to enter the college, during which the police personnel present at the gate stopped them. Student leader Vivekanand Singh said that when the land of the mausoleum does not belong to the Waqf Board, then this mausoleum should be removed from here. He said that if namaz is offered at a religious place, students will also recite Hanuman Chalisa there.

The police calmed down the matter

Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Cant Vidush Saxena said that adequate police force has been deployed at the gate of the college. On Friday, a group of students came to present their ideas. Meanwhile, the students also became a bit aggressive. The police have calmed down the matter. Meanwhile, some mischievous elements have also been identified, against whom appropriate action will be taken.

Students recited Hanuman Chalisa

Amid growing tension over demands to remove a mausoleum located on the Uday Pratap College campus, the police on Thursday banned entry of outsiders into the college campus and allowed entry only to students with valid identity cards.

Earlier on Tuesday, when prayers were offered near the temple, the students recited Hanuman Chalisa. According to local police, seven people were detained after the altercation on Tuesday. In view of the rising tension, the police have banned the entry of outsiders into the college premises and allowed only students with valid identity cards to enter.

Letter to Waqf Board

In a related incident, the students of the college formed a student court and sent an 11-point letter to the Uttar Pradesh Waqf Board seeking a reply within 15 days regarding the status of the tomb and its ownership.

Claims of Wakf Board and College Administration

Mohammad Yasin, joint secretary of Anjuman Intejamia Masjid Committee, said that they have written to the Uttar Pradesh Central Waqf Board to ascertain the status of this tomb. Earlier, the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board had claimed that the mausoleum built in the college campus and the surrounding land is the property of the Waqf. This claim has been rejected by the college administration.
