The most profitable film of 2024 was made on a budget of $2 million, but still surpassed Joker Folie à Deux, and became a bigger hit than Deadpool and Wolverine.
This was the year of sequels and remakes. The highest-grossing films across all genres were part of one franchise or another. Big movies like Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine grossed over a billion dollars at the box office. But despite this, these titles were not the most profitable films of the year. The world’s most profitable film of 2024
Independent horror flick Terrifier 3 is the biggest hit of the year if earnings are considered compared to budget. The Christmas supernatural slasher film was made on a budget of just $2 million and featured no recognizable names in the star cast. Nevertheless, the Damien Leone-directed film earned $90 million worldwide, 45 times its budget, on the back of positive reviews and solid word of mouth from audiences. This made it the most profitable film of the year. Inside Out 2, the highest-grossing film of the year, grossed $1.7 billion, but was made on a $200 million budget, making its profit percentage very low. Similarly, the other big hit of the year, Deadpool & Wolverine, also earned $1.33 billion on a budget of $200 million. These films earned 6-8 times more than their budget at the box office, but were far behind Terrifier 3 in terms of profits.
India’s highest grossing film Pushpa 2: The Rule has earned It earned Rs 1700 crore at the box office, which is almost five times its budget. This is, again, much lower than the number managed by Terrifier 3.
How Terrorizer 3 defeated Joker: Folie à Deux
Terrifier 3 was released in theaters on October 11, a week after the sequel to Todd Phillips’ billion-dollar hit Joker was released. And just as everyone expected Joker: Folie à Deux to be a boost to the indie horror film, the opposite happened. Due to poor reviews and mainstream fan disinterest, Joker: Folie à Deux failed at the box office. Terrorizer 3 made $18.9 million in North America in its opening weekend. That same weekend, Joker 2 finished second, managing only $7 million.
Directed by Damien Lyons, Terrifier 3 is the sequel to Terrifier 2 and Terrifier, both successful films in their own right. It stars David Howard Thornton, Lauren Lavera, Elliot Fullam and Samantha Scafidi.
