Tom Cruise brought the energy of Mission: Impossible to the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics when he carried the flag from the French capital to Los Angeles.
To prove that it’s not impossible to overtake Paris, Los Angeles landed a skydiving Tom Cruise on Sunday as it took over Olympics hosting duties from the French capital, which kicks off its 2024 Games. Tom Cruise – in his Ethan Hunt persona – surprised the crowd by descending from the top of the stadium with an electric guitar riffing Mission: Impossible. Tom will be part of MI in Paris Olympics
Grammy-winning R&B artist H.E.R. teased the Mission: Impossible soundtrack as Cruise leapt, leaving spectators in awe as he fell 50 meters to the floor of the Stade de France. Once his feet were back on the ground — and after shaking hands with excited athletes — he took the Olympic flag from star gymnast Simone Biles, mounted it on the back of a motorcycle, and left the arena.
In a pre-recorded segment, Cruise rode his bike past the Eiffel Tower, then boarded a plane and then skydived over the Hollywood Hills. Three circles were added to the O of the famous Hollywood sign, forming five interlaced Olympic rings. The flag was then carried through the city past past and present U.S. Olympians to a beach party where L.A. music icons the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Billie Eilish and Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre performed.
Tom on Sunday shared a photo of himself in a white shirt and black jacket from the Paris Olympics on his X handle. “Thanks, Paris! Now off to LA,” he wrote in the caption. He also reposted a video of him carrying the Olympic flag by LA28, the official X handle of the Los Angeles Olympics, the next edition scheduled to take place in 2028.
Tom will be in the next Mission: Impossible film
Paramount Pictures, the production house behind the Mission: Impossible franchise, shared a tribute video for Tom after the Paris Olympics closing ceremony. The caption read, “We would like to take this opportunity to thank Tom for all he has done for our industry and art forms as an actor and a producer. He has constantly strived for the highest proficiency in any and all skills that will enhance the story and experience for the audience.” Tom reposted the tweet and wrote, “I am incredibly proud of what we have done together. I look forward to sharing our next mission!”
Tom’s next spy thriller, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, is scheduled to release in theaters on May 21, 2025.
