Sharda Sinha, also known as ‘Begum Akhtar of Mithila’, was the mastermind behind Chhath Puja and many other festivals in the region and beyond. His songs echoed the voices of folk singers of the generations that came before him, his voice was earthy and filled with memories of home. The singer died on Tuesday night after a long battle with multiple myeloma. About Sharda’s musical journey
Sharda always used to release a song during the festivities and this year too she did the same despite her poor health. A trained classical singer who effortlessly weaved folk into many of her songs, Sinha was praised as the voice of her people and was often referred to as the ‘Nightingale of Bihar’. The Padma Bhushan recipient, whose career spanned more than five decades, lent her voice to songs in Maithili, Bhojpuri and Magahi languages.

1) Chhathi Maiya Aayi Na Duaria
Sharda sang this song in Bhojpuri and it was released in 2003. It was part of the album Sakal Jagatarini Hey Chhathi Maiya. She was also the composer of the song. The lyrics of the song have been written by Vinay Bihari. The song has become widely popular since its release and is always played during the festival of Chhath Puja.
2) Kartik month Ijoria
The song sung by Sharda is from the album Aragh which was released in 2005. It is composed by Shailesh Thakkar and lyrics are written by Jyotindra Mishra.
3) Ho Dinanath
This song is from the album Chhathi Maiya released in 1986. Apart from singing the song, Sharda was also its music director and lyricist.
4) Acacia
The song sung by Sharda is from the 1994 film Hum Aapke Hain Kaunse, directed by Sooraj Barjatya. The film stars Madhuri Dixit, Salman Khan, Mohnish Bahl, Renuka Shahane, Alok Nath, Reema Lagoo and Anupam Kher. In the film, it was shot on Mohnish and Renuka when their characters got married. This song was sung by Sharda with music by Ramlaxman and lyrics by Ravinder Rawal.
5) Dress up for no reason
Sharda lent her voice to the song of the 1989 film ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’. It has been filmed on Salman Khan and Bhagyashree. Directed by Sooraj Barjatya, the film also featured Alok Nath, Mohnish Bahl and Reema Lagoo. In the song, Salman and Bhagyashree’s characters are seen working in an under-construction building and spending time with each other. The music was composed by Ramalakshman and lyrics by Asad Bhopali.
About Sharda’s health, family
Sharda, who was suffering from multiple myeloma since 2017, was on oxygen support in the intensive care unit of Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital (IRCH), the cancer institute of AIIMS, since October 27. She is survived by her children– Vandana and Anshuman. A few weeks ago, he lost his father, Braj Kishore Sinha, due to brain hemorrhage after a fall. This was a severe blow for Sinha who was already ill.
Over the years, he has received various honors apart from Padma awards. These include Rashtriya Devi Ahilya Samman, Bihar Art Award, Bihar Ratna, Bhojpuri Ratna and Mithila Vibhuti Samman.
