
Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently responded to a comprehensive appeal to give tax-free status to the film ‘Chhawa’, which is a period drama based on the life of the legend Maratha ruler, Chhatrapati Subhaji Maharaj.
Fadnavis expressed his praise for the historical depiction of the film and said that he had heard a positive response from the public.
“I am glad that a very good film has been made on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. While I have to see it yet, I have heard from people that the film is made without distorting history,” Fadnavis said.
He further stated that Maharashtra had already lifted entertainment tax in 2017, “We will see what we can do to promote this film and make it available to more and more people.”
The film, which has been included in the lead role in the lead role, has been doing well at the box office since its release on 14 February.
‘Chhawa’ has already crossed a mark of Rs 100 crore in domestic earnings. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh said that the film earned more than Rs 121.43 crore alone in its early weekends, shattering pre-relief forecasts.

Adarsh resorted to social media to express his excitement, calling the film’s performance “unprecedented” and seeing that ‘Chhava’ captured the box office.
Taran Adarsha wrote on Instagram, “Chhava ‘has Dhamcardar, Zabardast Weekend … Chha sets #boxoffice on Sunday, with crosses Rs 100 crore and an unprecedented opening weekend has been recorded.”
Directed by Laxman YouTekar, ‘Chhawa’ has depicted the extraordinary life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Vicky Kaushal’s performance as the Maratha ruler was widely appreciated.
The film also stars Akshaye Khanna and Rashmika Mandanna in decisive roles.
While the film has attracted significant attention, many industries including the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) have called for a tax-free situation.
In a statement, FWIS stressed that the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj should be shared with a wide audience and strongly believed that the impact of the film would be enhanced with tax exemption.
FWIS appealed to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, requesting that the film be made tax-free, making it accessible to the audience not only in Maharashtra, but across the country.
In an interview recently, actor Vicky Kaushal revealed the challenges of playing such a monumental person in Indian history.
Kaushal admitted that a historical person requires immense discipline to play. He described his role as his “most difficult role” as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
