12th failed Actor Vikrant Massey has stressed his secular credentials after his upcoming film received polarized reactions.sabarmati reportReleasing in theaters on November 15, the film explores the sensitive subject of the burning of the Sabarmati Express train in Godhra, Gujarat in 2002, especially the media coverage of the incident at that time.
Vikrant is playing the role of a Hindi speaking investigative journalist in the film.
Recently in a podcast titled Unplugged with Shubhankar Mishra, Vikrant said that he is still a ‘liberal’ and ‘secular’ citizen.
Asked to give his definition of secularism, Vikrant said it means goodwill and respecting everyone’s culture.
“You know about my family. It was viral news that my parents had an inter-religious marriage. My brother has converted (to another religion). My wife is a Thakur Rajput Hindu. My son’s name is Vardan. What could be more secular than this?”
In the same podcast, Vikrant said that Hindus and Muslims are not in danger in the country, and suggested that these perceptions are shaped by the media. He said that his perspective about the state of the nation has changed in the last ten years.
“The things that seemed bad to me are not really bad. People say that Hindus are in danger, Muslims are in danger. No one is in danger; Everything is going well. This is the best country in the world to live in…and we are the future of the world.”
He also said that there is no right-left ideological divide in the country, but a strong right wing and “anti-right wing”.
The actor’s comment drew sharp reactions on social media, with a section of users calling it a promotional strategy for his film.
Earlier while talking to the media, Vikrant had said that he was receiving threats for acting in this film. sabarmati report,
“Yes, I am receiving threats. But like I said, we’re artists, and we tell stories. This film is completely based on facts. It’s something I’m dealing with, and we’re dealing with collectively as a team. I think we’ll handle it the way it should be,” Messi was quoted as saying.
