Importance of Durga Ashtami
Durga Ashtami symbolizes the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura, which symbolizes the victory of good over evil. On this day, the devotees worship Goddess Durga in his terrible form, Mahagauri, and perform rituals to honor their strength and divine energy.
Major rituals and traditions
1. Kanya Puja (Kanjak Puja)
One of the most important rituals, where nine young girls are worshiped as Navdurga. Devotees wash their feet, offer them food (pudding, puri, gram), gifts and blessings.
2. Romantic worship
Performed at the turn of Ashtami and Navami, this ritual is highly auspicious. This includes illuminating 108 lamps, offering flowers and chanting mantras to implement the blessings of the goddess.
3. Fasting and prayer
Many devotees consume only fruits, milk and satvic food and perform a strict fast. The special prayer and chanting of Durga Sapatashati is done in homes and temples.
4. Maha Navami ceremony
The next day, Maha Navami, symbolizes the completion of Navratri. Devotees perform Havan (Holy Fire Ritual) and worship Goddess Durga before bidding farewell with Durga Visarajan.
