Helsinki: A new study has revealed that love, whether romantic, familial, friendly or toward pets and nature, activates the brain’s reward and addiction systems. This is the system involved in activities such as drug addiction and video game addiction. This research also suggests that when we experience a breakup or loss, it causes emotional pain and physical suffering.

The study, published in “Cerebral Cortex,” involved researchers studying brain activity during different types of love. The research was conducted by researchers at Aalto University, Finland, with Partili Rinne as principal investigator. Researchers found that romantic and familial love, such as love for children or a partner, activates the brain’s reward system more. This is the same system involved in drug addiction or other addictive behaviors.

“This study provides evidence that romantic love and long-term attachment activate the brain’s reward and addiction circuits,” said neuroscientist Lucy Brown of Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He also said that the research is providing a clearer picture of how the brain works when a person is in love.

In the study, the brains of 55 people were analyzed.

The study analyzed the brain activity of 55 people using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Research has found that interpersonal love, such as love for one’s child, romantic partner or friends, results in greater activation of the brain’s reward system, while love for pets or nature has a slightly different effect. .

“Among pet owners, love for their pets activates more of the brain’s social cognition,” Rinne said. Furthermore, love of nature or art activates the brain’s visual system, but not parts associated with social cognition.
